The Wilderness Express operates on the Denali Star route with daily summer service between Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali National Park, and Fairbanks. These cars are usually the last on the train in each direction, offering first class views as the train winds its way on this picturesque route.

Wilderness Express Experience

Wilderness Express cars are pulled on the Alaska Railroad train, but they are privately owned and operated. Tap below to learn more about what sets the Wilderness Express apart.

Forward-facing leather seats in the upper-level dome, with 88 total seats split in pairs along a center aisle. Seats recline and have fold down trays. On the lower level are restrooms and a private 36-seat dining room. Each car has a wheelchair lift.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served based on the time of day of your trip. A full-service bar on the upper deck offers coffee, tea, non-alcoholic beverages, beer, wine, and cocktails. Meals are not included in the ticket price, and all trains are cashless.

Each car has a friendly host guide to point out route highlights along the way. A mile-by-mile Ride Guide is available for purchase onboard. Cars feature local Alaskan artwork. A lower-level outdoor viewing platform allows for photo ops and fresh air. Unlike other cars on the Alaska Railroad, you can’t walk between Wilderness Express cars and others on the same train.
