When’s the Best Time to Ride the Alaska Railroad?
The summer months are the best time to ride the Alaska Railroad. All three rail routes are operating and there are more day tours, lodging, and chances to see wildlife along the rail belt.
- For the best weather, take the train in June or July.
- For the best rates, take the train in late May or early September.
- For fall colors and a chance to glimpse the northern lights, take the train in late August or early September.
Mid-May kicks off summer travel but is still considered “shoulder” season. This makes it a great value time to visit Alaska, as hotels and the Wilderness Express offer lower rates. During this time our days are getting longer, foliage bursts with new green, and wildlife is on the move after a long winter.
June can still be cool, but the days are long. June 21 marks the summer solstice. Along the rail belt you’ll bask in anywhere from 17 to 21 hours of daylight. Along with the extra light, June tends to welcome mosquitoes along with travelers. This needs to be taken into consideration if planning any hiking or camping, especially in Denali National Park.
July is peak season in Alaska. It’s typically the warmest month of the summer, and also the most popular for travelers. It is best to book reservations well in advance for train transfers, lodging, and activities.
August is the beginning of the end for the Alaskan summer. Fall rains accompany shorter days. With this comes the first hint of fall colors.
September is like May with hotels and the Wilderness Express lowering rates. Some activities will also end due to the cooler temperatures and shorter days. Fall colors reach their peak in mid-September, with tundra and trees turning brilliant shades of yellow, red, and orange. And along with those dark nights, we also welcome back the chance to see the northern lights.
